Three Kids and a Dog

We Really Want a Cat!

I remember being 9 and begging my parents for a cat. They told me that if I got 16 out of 23 Outstandings on my report card then I could get one. I don't think they thought I could attain that or maybe they really wanted a cat too, but I did and so in the 4th grade we got our first cat.

We added two more cats later so at one time we had three cats.

My girls are begging for a cat. I love cats too. I just don't really think I want the added responsibility of a cat - not that they are that much work but you should hear the complaining by any one of the kids when I ask them to help out with Sadie.

Last Monday, I had signed the girls up to volunteer at the local humane society in their kids corp program. They had so much fun so I signed them up for a week of summer camp each. But each time they come home or even after they peruse their website of available pets, they tell me about all these different animals that need homes and beg to adopt one. I'm so tempted to rescue at least one and give them a forever home but I hold back because Sadie is so much work and doctor's appointments, etc. I don't want to commit to caring for another being when we are this busy unless the kids are going to help out and well, you know how that goes.

So maybe someday a cat will be in our future but for now, I think taking care of three kids and a dog is enough!

Soccer Time in AZ

Austen and I got to leave the cold behind this past weekend and travel to Arizona for a soccer tournament. We left Friday morning after we dropped the girls at school and got there just in time to pick up our "rental car," check into the hotel and change before traveling another 35 minutes to the fields.

First, the rental car process was amazing. A friend tipped me off to the chaos of the rental car process in AZ two weeks earlier and told me to try Turo - basically the VRBO of rental cars. We rented a BMW convertible for $100 less and it probably saved us about two hours worth of time. Every one of Austen's teammates had stories about their hours of waiting in line for a rental car in AZ. Our process was super easy. Take a short shuttle to pre-flight parking, look for your car in the row/space given and unlock the lockbox with the provided code to be on your way. We had a pass to get out of the pre-flight parking for free and the whole process probably took 15 minutes. Super easy.

The fields on the other hand were not easy. They were, however, gorgeous. A huge complex of baseball, soccer, volleyball, basketball and pickleball courts with restaurants and food trucks. But with only two entrances into the very crowded complex, it took forever each morning to actually drive in and park. Plus, there were so many fields with only one entrance (because they made you pay each day to enter) so you could be walking 10-15 minutes to your field.

Anyway, the boys won their first game 2-0. Austen had a nice goal with a turnaround fake and shot but he was still in a foul mood after the game, lamenting how he didn't even break a sweat because the subs also got 50% playing time at this tournament (which since it was National League we thought was just for the top players). Maybe the next day would be more fair with them scheduled to play a very good Las Vegas team. Austen quickly got over it as the boys bonded over a quick dinner and then cheered on their goalkeeper who was competing in the Goalkeeper Wars at the field (each goal keeper has two 6-minute halves to shoot on the opposing goalkeeper and defend their own goal with the winner advancing to the next round). Their keeper made it through four rounds on Friday to advance to the winners bracket on Saturday evening. The boys were pumped.

But, that adrenaline did not carry over into Saturday. They had an early morning game and went down 1-0 in the first five minutes because they got called for a foul in the box so the other team got a PK which they converted. Austen did have one good opportunity as he traveled down the right side of the field after a ball sent his way, flicking it over his defender and then controlling the ball by passing it to his feet with his head but just before he was about to take a shot which would have for sure been a goal, the defender poked it away with his toe and made it a corner kick.  After that, it was time for the subs to come in. So pretty soon it was 3-0 at the half. Las Vegas scored another goal in the second half to make it  4-0 for the final score. Tough way to go down against a good team.

Saturday afternoon was probably Austen's favorite time though. Top Golf was right next to our hotel so since I had the foresight to book some bays a week before, the boys were able to golf together while the parents hung out in the sunshine at the Top Golf bar. We all had dinner together that evening before racing back to catch the final of the Keeper Wars. Their goalie won it all (he's amazing!) and will be competing at Nationals in Florida in July. Now the boys have some incentive to work much harder so they can all go and compete (and cheer their goalie on).

Sunday was an early game too against a team from Portland. They weren't that good. Subs got to play too. We ended the game 2-0 with an assist from Austen off a beautiful corner. Right after the game ended we hightailed it out of there to catch our flight home.

It was a quick trip and even though the soccer wasn't that great, the Vitamin D was wonderful!

The Calm Before the Storm

Last weekend, we got to enjoy a nice long weekend up in Michigan. The first in awhile and the last for a really long time once spring sports season truly begins.

Sadie on the Riverwalk
The kids were off on Friday from all three of their schools (two districts) which never happens or doesn't happen very often. So we left Thursday night after high school conferences (Tom attended this time and spoke with Austen's Physics, Geometry and World Cultures teachers) then it was off to Michigan. We got to sleep in on Friday morning and then we hit the slopes at our favorite nearby Michigan ski resort, Bittersweet. All the Michigan kids were in school so we basically had the slopes all to ourselves. Austen did see two of his good friends there while we were waiting in the lift lines (one of them also has a house not far from ours up there) so he was really happy he got to ski all day with his friends (and not his sisters).

We got in a lot of runs, however, it wasn't without a lot of complaining. Life used to be so much simpler (and quieter) when it was just Tom and me on the chairlift. Hailey still hasn't forgiven me for the chairlift debacle in Breckenridge last year (where she forgot to get off and blamed me) so she will only ride with Tom on the chairlift or very, very begrudgingly with me. Peyton, on the other hand, freaks out over the smallest creak in the lift and thinks we are going to fall every time we ride up. Then she didn't want to go on the one high speed lift because she said it went too fast. But she did this in Breckenridge all the time and wants to go on more posh ski adventures (where they have all high speed lifts) so I don't get this girl. Finally, I convince her to give it a try and she realizes the lift actually is slower when it picks you up and then speeds up going to the top.

Only after Tom sends Hailey off a steep drop where she falls on her butt and then takes off back toward the lodge do we decide to end our day and find Austen (who just had ended his fabulous day with his friends and not his whiny sisters). He did do some jumps in the terrain park much to my dismay but he said he kept it conservative (too many sports to play!).

After we headed home and showered, we went to a new brewery in Allegan County and started to play the new NY Times game Wordle.

Saturday was another day of sleeping in, watching soccer (me and Austen) and then just exploring a new town in Michigan - historic Marshall. They had a great riverwalk system and it was a gorgeously warm day so we took Sadie and got some steps in soaking in the great weather. That night we went to one of our favorite restaurants in Fennville  - Salt of the Earth - where we met the chef and chatted up our usual waitress, Christy (who we found was married to the chef!). Our waiter was attending the seminary there too so it was an exciting evening of getting to know the staff. We ended the day with a quick few games of Quiplash on Nintendo.

Sunday was another day of sleeping in and doing laundry before leaving around noon to get home for Austen's last make up drivers ed class (which he says was almost as boring as religious ed).

All in all, it was a great weekend of sleeping in and getting in some exercise before the spring storm does us in!

Sadie Turns 6!

That's 42 in dog years (I'm still older than her) but still we celebrate every year that this pup makes it. So on Sunday, off we went to the dog bakery to pick up a cake and some special treats for Sadie so we could celebrate her on February 28!

The girls made her cards (one nice, one not so nice) and gave her lots of love. Peyton wrote:

Dear Sadie,

I love you! I hope you enjoy your treats! Happy b-day! Hope you have the best day ever!

With Love,

Peyton

Hailey's card was quite a different story:

Dear Sadie,

You're a wonderful and fat dog. Thank you for drooling all over my seat and ripping my bow. You're a helpless dog to have.

Lots of Love,

Hailey

Then she adds next to a picture of a dog (Sadie), "I do diddly squats every day. I sure do!"

What?! Anyway, Sadie had lots of love and attention (at least from me) and I took her for a car ride (her favorite) and a walk (not her favorite - I think for her birthday, she would have preferred to lay in the yard and get no exercise but still we walked because it was a beautiful day and she needed to get out of the house).

That night we celebrated with a special peanut butter cake and some treats. (No toys for her birthday this year as she really just prefers food!).

She's done well health-wise this past year. Just trying to figure out how she can get up more on her own now that her knees are fully healed (and how we can get her to walk more!).

Sadie's favorite place - the car!
